FRENCH RAILWAYS
HEAVY DEFICIT SHOWN ECONOMIC RE-ARRANGEMENT Received Aug. 12, 9.50 p.m. PARIS, Aug. 12. The-French railways deficit for 1930 was £14,500,000. Judging by the halfyear’s returns it will be £22,500,000 in 1931. In order to place the lines on an economic basis it is proposed to raise fares 25 per cent., close many stations and abolish certain local lines, substituting motor omnibus or light motor vehicles using railway lines.
