DEFENCE VOLUNTEERS

NOTES OF THE DAY WELLINGTON WEST COAST REGIMENT. The strength of the W.W.C. Regiment is now 136 all ranks and recruiting is proceeding steadily. A good type is coming forward and great keenness is being shown by all ranks, in the work. The following N.C.O. promotions have been made by the O.C. Machine Gun Company: —No. 1 Platoon: Sgt. G. G. Beaven, Cpls. W. J. Craig, L. J. C. Rutherford, C. W. Berryman, and A. A. Shearer. No. 2 Platoon: Sgt. J. H. Bevan, Cpls. F. J. DDomncy, P. Koorey, D. A. Langslow, C. O’Brien and B. C. Tasker.

It is intended to start training in Marton during the last week in August. Marton volunteers are very keen to make a start, and the quota is already full in that town. A meeting of all officers and N.C.O.’s is to bo held on the 17th inst (Monday night next) for the purpose of forming committees to deal with sporting and social activities within the unit. In this respect tho Wanganui Boxing Association has communicated with the unit with regard to co-operating in boxing matters. Under the compulsory scheme several excellent tournaments were run by the Territorials, and it is hoped to revive these under the voluntary scheme. It has not yet been definitely decided when the annual camp will be held, but it is expected that it will be some time about February next. In this respect it has been notified that Civil Servants who volunteer and wish to attend camp will be permitted to do so without loss of pay or deductions from annual leave. Major D. A. C. Lilburne has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Decoration, and Major G. E. Pollock has been awarded the N.Z. Long and Efficient Service Medal. An indoor tactical scheme on the sand model is proposed for all officers on September 1 and 2. The results of the shooting contest against various battalions of the Hampshire Regiment have now been received, and are as under:— Ist. Bn. Hampshire Regiment .. 619 Ist. Bn. W.W.C.
