INTER B.C. MEETING

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT TEA, SPEECH AND PLAY A good tea, a fine speech and a happy play comprised the main features of the programme of the InterBible Classes’ meeting held in St. Paul’s Hall last evening, when over 250 young people assembled. The tea commenced at 5.30 p.m. and after the inner man was appeased, a community sing, led by Mr R. Tiszard, made the welkin ring. The president, Mr H. C. Jenkins, announced that he had been gratified at the response to his appeal for garden seed for the unemployed of Wanganui.* The distribution of the seeds was being undertaken by Mr Gorins, of the Department of Labour, and he was sure that his Worship the Mayor, Mr Armstrong. would be gratified at the effort the Bible Class Movement had made in response to his request. Mr Jenkins then introduced Mr Frank Purnell, an old Wanganui boy, who had made good in the United States and also in Honolulu. Mr Purnell, who was applauded on rising, first placed ceremonial wreaths on the president and donned one himself. He then took his audience to Honolulu and showed the racial problem that had grown up there, consequent upon the population being recruited from China and Japan to work the sugar industry. The efforts to Christianise these polyglot peoples was detailed and it was asserted that there was no lack of students, but a lack of money to hire the more teachers that were needed.

Mrs Morris and her friends then produced “The Twelve Pound Look,’’ J. M. Barrie’s delightful little comedy. In a stage setting provided by Messrs Pursers’ Limited, which all admired, the play went to its adroit conclusion, the finale bringing a very appreciative response from the audience. Mrs Morris and her friends were congratulated by the president on behalf of the movement.
