THOUSANDS DROWNED
A CALAMITY IN CHINA HANKOW CITY INUNDATED RIVER 60 FEET ABOVE NORMAL PLAGUE AND FAMINE SPREAD [P, Teleßraph—Press Association—Copyright I Received Aug. 10, 9.40 p.m. SHANGHAI, Aug. 10. The flood situation at Hankow, following several weeks’ rain, has assumed the proportions of a national calamity affecting inestimable millions. Tint entire city is inundated several feet and the Hangtze River, at a record level is in palces more than 60 feet above normal. Plague is spreading and there is an acute food shortage. Ten thousand people already are drowned, including several hundred convicts who were trapped in the flood waters. Five thousand sampans arc replacing rickshaws and the city’s transportation business is almost at a standstill. Foreign firms are requesting food from Shanghai. A 20,000,000 dollar flood relief fund is being opened by the Government.
