POTATO CROPS
DIRECTIONS FOR PLANTING Potatoes that have been sprouted should be planted as soon as about an inch or so of young shoots has been made. With this crop it is too great a risk to plant in situations liable to severe frosts. Select the driest and warmest position, and in planting, place the sets only deep enough to allow of an inch or two or fine soil to cover the sprouts. Warmth at this season is what the roots require, and this can be best attained by keeping the plants well earthed up, as they advance in growth. Early planted crops that are now well above ground, will also require care in this respect. Well earthing up, in addition to giving added warmth to. the soil, assists in some measure to protect the foliage from frosts and harsh winds. A sowing of early peas can be made in a warm sheltered position. For this crop the ground requires to be deeply dug, well manured and provided with free drainage.
