REMOVING FRECKLES

Horseradish is a familiar accompaniment to roast beef, but not many people would recognise it as a beauty ingredient! It is, however, useful for removing freckles “of the less stubborn variety” (states Lois Leeds in her book on “Beauty and Health”). Take two tablespoonsful of freshly grated horseradish and pour over it a cupful of boiling water. When cool strain and use. Parsley water is equally good. Pour a cupful of boiling water over a large bunch of parsley. Add one teaspoonful of finely powdered borax and leave until cool. Old-fashioned house wives always made a decoction of sage in cases of sore throat or troublesome cough. They would gather a handful of the fresh leaves in the kitchen garden and would put them in a basin with two large breakfast-cups of boil ing water. When partly cooled a little honey and vinegar would be added. This was taken in tcaspoonsful. Nut meg tea was another famous old remedy for inducing sleep. A pint of boil ing water was poured on to a grated nutmeg, and a small teacupful taken at bed lime. (Some of our readers may have seen the quaint little silver nut-meg-box and grater, attached to the old chatelaines such as our great greatgrandmothers wore at their waistbelts). Mrs Leyel points out that Frenchwomen obtain similar results by the nightly use of orange-flower water. A pint of boiling water is poured on to Joz of lump sugar, and a tablespoonful of orange-flower water is added. A little jof this is sipped at bedtime. Liracflowcr tea, made from the blossoms of i the limo tree, is even more efficacious, while more within the scope, of the ordinary household is hot orange tea. made with the sweetened juice of an orange and sufficient boiling water to fill the cup.
