FURNISHING FASHIONS

Patchwork and red velvet were once favourite schemes for furnishing a room, but it was soon discovered that these styles greatiy attracted the dust and at the same time tended to become drab.

Cretonne, with its varied and bright patterns, has lately been much in vogue. It has been superseded by other materials, which will bo bright and practical and at the same time suitable for period rooms, such as Jacobean, Victorian or Edwardian.

Experiments in British mills have resulted in a new “antique” material, which looks as if it has been rubbed and worn with time and much use. The colours arc of a dull gold, dull green, and dull bluos. All, however, have distinctly mellowed tones.

When cretonne first appeared it was in spring-time patterns of rosebuds and cornflowers, but nature has given way to science and now we find modern designs of cubes and triangles in bright tones on a pastel-shaded background. Coloured lace curtains add greatly to the harmony and colour scheme of a room. Lettuce-green and lupin-blue lace curtains arc of valuable help in softening the strong sunlight of a room which is heated by the strong afternoon sun. Warmer tones give a cosy atmosphere to a cold room in winter. Terry cloth gives a sun-room a playroom atmosphere and is at the same time cool and easy to arrange. Muslin is still a great favourite with people who prefer old-fashioned simplicity, and dyed linen is especially useful in humid summer weather.
