MAJESTIC. “The Big House,” coming to tlu , Majestic Theatre at Taihape to morrow is a thrilling convict story based on the episode which took place in America recently when the convicts at a prison tried to escape. Machine-guns an brought into action and modern war fare is introduced into the prison. Wallace Beery takes a leading part and is ably supported by a first-class cast. GOLF NOTES. Keys for the club house may be obtained from the secretary on payment of a deposit of 2s 6d, which will be refunded at any time, should the holder of the key find no further use for it. The Borough Engineer (Mr 11. A. Truman), submitted the following report at the last monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council:— “Main Highways.—General maintenance work has been carried out on these highways during the month, watertables have been cleaned and corners and sides have been trimmed. I have submitted estimates for the current year to the ooard for their approval. These estimates are set out on the at tached report on estimates. “ Unemployment Relief Works, No. 5 Scheme.—An average ot 11 men have been employed during the month under this scheme and they have been at work widening Mataroa Road, widening bad corners on Huia Street. As soon as above works have been completed it a my intention to start a gang widening corners on Ellis Road. With reference to bad corner on Ellis Road where the steps come down from Pukeliou Street. I propose making a survey of the roa<’ and locating the exact position of the road boundary in the locality, and if the road is wide enough I consider thai the present steps should bo altered and brought down Ellis Road and so allow this bad corner to be taken off. * ‘Roads and Streets.—Watertables have been cleaned and road-surface trimmed on Kiwi Road, Ruru Road. Pukehou Street, Titi Street, Whin Street, Lark Street, Mataroa Road, Linnet Street, Eaglo Street, and Hospital Steps. Ellis Road steps have been repaired and renewed where necessary. The roads generally are now in fair condition and most of the work, such as cleaning growth out of the watertables and off sides of roads, etc., is well in hand. This has been brought about by the introduction of the ward system some twelve months ago, and I now find that I can carry out the ordinary maintenance work with less men. J therefore propose reverting to the original number of staff by dispensing with one man, and taking on extra men as required from time to time. I find that metal repairs are necessary in many places. However, 1 am not doing any more metalling work than is abso lutely necessary as metal from Kakariki is costing about. 25s per cubic yard un the road, due to the increase of rai. way freighi early in the year. The Rangitikei County Council is putting in crushing plant at Utiku, from whi -n I hope to obtain metal for at least 10« er cubic yard less than it is at present, costing. As soon as this metal is available I will carry out necessary repairs. The County Engineer nfonred me that bn hoped to be able co supply metal ircm this plant at a* out the end of this month. Kawiu Bead has teen scarified and big stones have been knapped and the whole surface has been topdressed with fine metal from borou«jh pit As instructed 1 inspected boulder? on Ellis and Ruru Roads and find that they are creating a nuisance and interfering with the drainage of the road, particularly on Ruru Road. I estimate the cost of removing these boulders at £7 6s. Robin Street, in front oi the r&i’way station, is in urgent need of repairs; however, for reasons set out in report on estimates I am :»t present unable to carry this work out. “Waterworks.—The pipe-line ha< been working very satisfactorily curin' f hp month; no tiouble has been experience a. It has been inspected regularly. The level of w:«.uor in the reservoir has been maintained at a high level. r l .<uble was experieiced in Mataroa lb a I on the ocai reticulation m / n.< This was caused through the corrosion cf a spiral pine in three different p!a?< “Drainage and Sewerage.—Sep lie. tanks, conveniences and sewers have all recevied attention during the month and arc in good working order. “Traffic Work. Much of my time has been taken up in testing applicants for drivers’ licenses under the new regulations. These regulations call for a stricter test than formrely. “Estimtaes Summary.—Huia Street, £7O; Moa Street, £9O; Kuku Sueet, £l5; Kotare Street, £l6; general repairs, maintenance, etc., £500; tools, etc.. £166; renewal of culverts, £3O; Robin Street repairs, £4O; cleaning street.-, £100; bitumen sprayers, £4O; unemplov merit relief works, No. 5 Scheme, £150; Main Highways: Bulls Taumarunn. £807; Taihapc-Mataroa, £3BB. total, £2412; less subsidies £812; total, £l6OO
