TRAINING OPERATIONS

FINAL WORK ON TRACKS On Tuesday morning at Greenmeadows the majority of the Hawke’s Bay horscse engaged at Napier on Thursday were given their final tryout. All ast work was done on the outside of the course proper which, after the recent wet weather, was in far better order than one w< Id expect. Head Serang nd White Fang were first out, finishing abreast efter leaving three-quarter of a mile behind in 1.22, but as each was doing it asily the time could have been improved on. Cloyne and kaokaoroa ran the last six furlongs of a mile in 1.29. The former, with a light weight in the saddle, could have done ever so much better. Sir Spear nd Leyland, separately, were given working gallops, both hitting out in good style. Hystride, alone got to th c- of three furlongs in 391scc—going well. Cuticle was responsible for the b est gallop of the morning. With about. 7.7 in the saddle she ran seven furlongs in 1.32, the last six of the journey in J. 19. Re pay was to good for Sir Moment over five furlongs in 66see. the former having a big pull in the weights. Great Charter and Moa Bird were mates in a six-furlong gallop, keeping together all the way in i.2°l with Great Charter going the easier at t e finish. Over th" first two furlongs the pair were going very slow, that dis tanee taking 27see, otherwise the time for the six would have be n bettered.

Merry Mint went very pleasingly in his live-furlong gallop, which occupied GGJsec. This is the best the big fellow has has done for sonic lime, and reveals that he is just about back to his best. Sweet Sue, Jone, carrying well over ten stone in the saddle, left half a mile, behind in 52Lscc. Wee Boy and Might Speaker took 684 sec to traverse .ivc furion; s, the latter going the best. Nea Lap, alone, ran three furlongs in 39sec, which is about the best she has ever been guilty of. The full sister to the Melbourne Cup champion may yet develop into a payable! pro position. Gaze and Manuiri ran the last six furlongs of ven in 1.15 i, with Manuiri doing it the nicer of the two. Okapua (Skipper) was sent a round of the schooling hurdles. 'Pho full brother to Paiko, for a young ’un. went very well, jumping very carefully, but neatly. Princess Elizabeth • L. Dunn), jumping in her usual proficient manner, did a similar task. Fine Acre (McGovern), Winter Day (Skipper), and Kigoletto (Deslandes) were sent over ten of the steeplechase fences. All went well and finished in a line over the last brush. Fine Acre did not jump too well over the first three, but when warming up to his work went ever so much better. The other pair also pleased. Battlement (Deslandes) and Goshawk (McGovern) were not bustled in a round of the hurdles, which took 1.51. Both jumped safely.
