NAPIER PARK RACES

FIRST SINCE EARTHQUAKE PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (By ‘‘Kestrel”). For the first time since the Hawke’s Bay earthquake disaster of February last a race meeting will be held in the stricken area to-day and on Saturday, the fixture being the winter gathering of the Napier Park Racing Club. In view of the fact that the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's meeting will follow so soon after to-day’s gathering it will be interesting to see how well the fixture at Greenmeadows is patronised. There are very satisfactory fields engaged for the various events and the day’s racing should be interesting at any rate. The first of the seven events, to start at noon, is the MOTEO HACK HURDLES. (Of £100; 1% miles.)

Some of those engaged have been seen in action recently but there arc also some newcomers likely to make an appearance. Perhaps the best may be expected of Mountain Heath, Princess Elizabeth and Bennanee. Ten are set down to contest the PETANE HACK STEEPLECHASE.

They are a fairly even lot with nothing much between the topweight and those on the minimum. Winter Day and Call Again may share favouritism and Kaokaoroa may be in the picture. Nine is the main for the MEEANEE HACK HANDICAP. (Of £100; six furlongs.)

Judging by False Scent s most recent displays the topweight should take a lot of beating. Repay and Motoa are likely to show up also. It is not a strong field that will contest the NAPIER STEEPLECHASE.

Some idea of the class may be gathered from the fact that Bed Fuchsia heads the list in spite of the fact that the All Red gelding has not yet won an open steeplechase. Looking further down the field of seven acceptors one cannot go past a consistent pair like Handy and Woden, with Red Fuchsia likely to carry a good deal of support. A dozen remain in the MAIDEN SCURRY (Of £75; five furlongs.) Abasan Sweet Sue Pik etG Lady Wangaehu Mon R O : Dick Whittington Crown Jest Corneroff Valina Dozie Happy Hit Bell Boy It is taking some of these a long time to graduate from the ranks of the non-winners, but it may be the right day for Crown Jest, Di*ek Whittington or Pikete. A mile is the distance they have to cover in the STEWARDS’ STAKES. (Of £125; one mile.)

At the weights this task should just about suit Pcwa, Rory Mor and Arikira. To conclude the day ’s racing there will be the SETTLERS’ HACK HANDICAP. (Of £100; seven furlongs.)

Chief Savage is one that is due for a win in an event of this nature, and he may carry more support than Adventus and Baskier. the last-named being more at home at a shorter distance.
