WOMAN’S NARROW ESCAPE. (Per Press Association.) TIMARU, Juno 24. Shortly after ton o’clock last night, fire broke out in the premises of Charles Begg and Co. at the corner of t h e Arcade at Stafford Street and cans'" serious damage. Before tho alarm w:igiven tho. fire had already burst through tho roof and when the briga le airbed it had a ittrong hold, flames leaping high over the doomed building Once tho brigade arrived, however, flames were quickly brought under con trol, but not before considerable damage had been done. The blaze was a spectacular one am< for a time fears were enterta'"i-’d thn* tho. conflagration would spread to adjoining buildings, but tho hrigad? han I eld the situation excellent'y The building, which is owned by Mr W. ATcKenown, Christchurch, was badly damaged by fire, whilst water caused considerable destruction in the main shop. A tenant, Airs Johnstone, was >r bed when the fire broke out and had a narrow escape. She got out of a window aid walked along the glass vor-indah. but in her prograss was badly cut bv broken glass, and was attended by a doctor.
