EMPIRE TOURNAMENT. SCORES AT SYDNEY. Received June 23, 1.5 a.m. SYDNEY, June 23. In the Empire billiards tournament the first match between Hayes (Australia) and Hackett (New Zealand) resulted in an easy victory for Hayes. The final scores were: Hayes 2000, with breaks of 41) and 43; Hackett 1161, with breaks of 97 and 41. The New Zealander had many clever shots but was not so skilled as his op ponent in positional control. His 97 included a run of nursery cannons. The second game, between Sid Lee (British champion) and 11. L. Goldsmith (Australia) is in progress. Scores arc: Lee 666, including breaks of 130 and 115; Goldsmith 371, including breaks of 50 and 38.
