ALARMING QUAKES

SHOCKS IN POVERTY BAY RESIDENT-, RUN INTO STREETS DAMAGE IN COUNTRY CENTRES (Per Press Association.) GISBORNE, Juno 23. The early morning ’quake at 3'.3 streets in their night attire. in the country districts of Poverty Bay. In Gisborne buildings rocked alarmingly and much excitement was caused, people rushing out into the streets in thei might attire. Practically no damage was done in the business area, except minor losses of stock in shops. The arc of the ’quake was practically the same as the heavy shock on Alay 7, extending from Tokomaru Bay to below Wairoa. Tho centre of tho disturbance is believed to have been near Nuhaka and Morere, some 20 miles north of Wairoa toward Gisborne. Chimneys, tanks and crockery were badly damaged in this locality. At Nuhak the shake lasted for 45 seconds, and tho oscillations continued until after 7 o’clock this morning. The shake is considered next in severity to that of February 3. At Omana native pa and Nuhaka, tho power lines were wrenched from the buildings. Heavy shakes were experienced in tho Wharcrata, Alangapoiki and Tiniroto districts, some 20 or 30 miles inland from Gisborne. At Alangapoiki homestead were shifted slightly on their blocks. At 11. ngaroa, minor shakes fo owing tho three o’clock jolt continued all to-day, but as far ns can be gathered, there is very little damage beyond broken chimneys. Waingakc reports that the shake was the worst yet experienced. No chimney is standing in the district, and a number of windows are broken. In some houses the cooking ranges were shifted. Heavy losses in crockery are reported on all stations near Waingakc. A prominent resident has estimated that about 80 shakos have been experienced tho big shake on February 3, and from 6 to 7.45 to-night 10 distinct shakes were experienced. NO DAMAGE REPORTED. Ono of tho most severe ’quakes since the initial shocks in February and tho heaviest since the one which caused minor damage on Alay 7, was experienced at 3 o’clock this morning, but no further damage is reported.

HEAVY AND PROLONGED. ALARAI AT WAIROA. (Per Frees Association.J WAIROA, June 23. A heavy and prolonged earthquake was experienced at 3.7 a.m. to-day. rousing people from their sleep and greatly frightening them. Buildings rocked alarmingly for some time. Afinor shakes at frequent intervals .followed for four hours. No damage is reported. NUHAKA SUFFERS. AIUCH DAMAGE DONE. [ Ter Press Association. ] WAIROA, June 23. The Nuhaka and Morere districts fared badly and were evidently tho centre of the disturbance. Chimneys and tank sare down again at many residences and there has been much damage indoors. Nuhaka stores report considerable losses through breakages. The town and other parts of the district escaped more lightly. Nuhaka is 103 miles north-east of Napier by motor, or 47 miles by motor south of Gisborne. Its population is about 300. Morere is about six miles nearer Gisborne and has hot mineral springs.
