Public Opinion
UNEMPLOYMENT Sir, —I must strongly protest at the remarks passed at the last meeting of the Farmers’ Union held in Wanganui, when Mr Franklin stated anything we do only seems to increase the unemployed and is like feeding a Jot of birds. And these remarks, also those of Mr Currie, that single men would have to get out in the country. Perhaps Mr Franklin and his colleagues would be in favour of sending these birds to the Urewa country in Rua’s stronghold and live on mira berries. Only a few vears back these same birds, or many of them came back from the war and were pro mised they would be looked after; they did not want charity, only a fair deal by those that stayed at home and kept the home fires burning. And as to Air Campion’s description of “a premium on wasters” under the unemployment scheme by the administrative staff, is totally uncalled for. May I quote that well-known line of Bobby Burns, “Alan’s inhumanity to man’s makes, countless thousands worn.”—l am, etc., , G. WICKHAM. ’ Waitotara, 22/6/31. THE SUNSHINE CLUB Sir,—May I trespass on a little space in your paper to express my appreciation of the Sunshine Club. A club formed by a JitHe band of Wanganui ladies to give instant and direct relief to those in need. My experience of the Sunshine. Club is both personal and by observation, and I hope they get all the assistance they require to carry on this work of helping those in need. Keep on spreading sunshine. It is needed.—l am, etc., A WELL WLSHER.
