WIMBLEDON TOURNEY COCHET’S DEFEAT SURPRISES. A SENSATION CAUSED. j LONDON, June 22. At Wimbledon, in the first round of tho singles, Nigel Sharp© surprisingly defeated Cochet, 6—l, 6—2, 6—3. In the first round of the singles Borotra beat Smith, B—6, 4 —6, B—6, 6—l; Santos beat Kirby, 6—3, 6—2, 6—4; Shields beat Spence, 6—l, 6—l, 6—2. Other winners were Perry, Austin, Boussus, Wood and Malfroy (New Zealander), who had a walk-over. The Wimbledon tournament, in which twenty-three nations aro competing, opened sensationally with the defeat of Cochet, which was the biggest sensation for several years, as it was regarded as certain Cochet would carry off the singles title. Ho had not fully recovered from influenza and lacked practice. The Frenchman showed flashes of brilliance, but beat himself by his own errors. Sharpe was steadiness personified.
