BULLS

RUGBY FOOTBALL. A good, crowd rolled up to the senior match played on the Domain on Saturday afternoon, and considering that the Bulls team was without, the services of L. Homes, D. Cameron ami R. Cameron, tho blacks gave the redoubtable Old Boys a really good game, the visitors only winning by IS to 9. Bulls fur wards held the upper hand in the loose, but the combination and speed of the visitors’ backs turned the scale in the blues’ favour. For the winners Waldin was everywhere, and did an immense amount of work, while the flying wing three-quarters, Blakeway and Dickson, rounded off many bright passing rushes with splendid tries. Play in the opening stages was straggling, a strong sun making the ball difficult for Old Boys to take, and Bulls forwards attacked. Lyons sent them back with good line kicks, and the blue backs carried on with snappy passing runs, from one of which Blakeway broke through ami short-punted, but was obstructed, ami from the resulting “free” Walding just, missed the uprights. Ellery led the blacks to the other end, and passed to J. Homes, who was pushed out. A scrum was formed, and the ball went from Cutts to Gallagher. to Ellery, who scored a simple try. Bartlett failed with the kick, and with 20 minutes gone the score read: Bulls 3, Old Boys 0. Ellery broke through again, but Waldin stopped a dangerous rush, and Lyons cleared well. Blue backs opened out, and when within range o" the posts Blakeway potted, but missed. Bush set Old Boys on the attack again, and eventually a passing rush saw Dickson get. across. Waldin made a good but ineffectual attempt to goal. Old Boys 3, Bulls 3.

Fumbling by Dickson lot Preston through, and from a scrum Cutts worked the blind side to send Sanson over in the corner. Bartlett’s kick went wide. Bulls 6. Old Boys 3.

Forwards of each side attacked in turn. Then Waldin broke through and passed to Hamer, to Williams, who scored under the posts. Blakeway’s Fick went outside. Old Boys 6, Bulls 6.

With honours even, the second spell opened at a warm pace. Blue forwards came through, and Waldin’s penalty shot just fell short. Richardson returning to half-way. Passing by the visitors’ backs saw Blakeway obstructed, and Waldin had another fruitless shot at goal. Again the blue backs fed Blakeway, and the speedy winger swerved past Gallagher to register a fine try. His kick at goal dropped under the bar. Old Boys 9, Bulls 6. Bulls forwards rushed their opponents’ line, and a score seemed imminent until Blakeway forced. Waldin changed the scene of operations in a flash, send ing Holder and Dickson away, the latter scoring. Blake way again missed tho kick. Old Roys 12, Bulls 6. Tho ball was no sooner in motion again than Trotter made a solo run down field, and the blue backs swung into lino to send Blakeway over for another great try. Waldin’s kick went astray. Old Boys 15, Bulls 6. Playing doggedly, the black forwards got back to their opponents’ line, where Lyon was bustled, Ellery robbing him of the ball to touch down near the posts. Gallagher’s kick was disallowed Bulls 9, Old Boys 15. Bulls continued to press, and Cutts took play to blues’ corner, but two “frees” gave relief. Parkes and Dickson, inter-passing, ran nearly the length of the field, Dickson getting over wide out. He took the kick himself, but failed to add the major points, and the game ended: Old Boys 18, Bulls 9. Rev. P. H. Leonard refereed. Old Boys Fourths forfeited to Bulls Fourths on Saturday, much to the disappointment of many who came along to see the boys play.
