STEAMER GIVES DISTRESS CALL i PROPELLER BROKEN 1300 MILES OFF AUCKLAND MOTOR SHIP MOVES TO THE RESCUE [ Per Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, June 22. TJie UliiTinan Bueknell steamer, City of Kimberley, en route from New York to Auckland, has lost her propeller and is drifting in the Pacific 1300 miles from Auckland. The New Zealand i Shipping Company’s motor ship, Opawa, which is coming to Auckland from Liverpool and is near the City of Kimberley, has gone to her assistance. Wireless advice of the mishap was received in Auckland by the New Zealand Shipping Company. It is presumed the Opawa will tow the City of Kimberley to Auckland, the nearest port at which docking facilities are available. The position of the City of Kimberley is probably to the south of the Cook Islands. The Opawa had previously reported by wireless that she would arrive at Auckland at daybreak on Thursday, which means that she was about 1000 miles from Auckland this morning. The message reporting the accident did not state when the Opawa was diverted to render assistance to the distressed steamer, but if it was early this morning she would reach the City of Kimberley to-morrow. It will be a long tow to Auckland, but the vessels are expected to arrive toward the middle of next week.
