HER LAST CURTAIN
DEATH OF NELLIE STEWART. “SWEPT NELL OF OLD DRURY.” Received June 21, 11.25 p.m. SYDNEY, June 21. Nellie Stewart, who for many years played the leading roles in comic opera and was featured in “Sweet Nell of Old Drury,” died of pleurisy at Mosman to-day. The announcement of the passing of Nellie Stewart, perhaps the most fanions of Australian actresses, and certainly the most popular in her day, marks the end of a lengthy career on the comic opera stage. It would be safe to say that for half a century Nellie Stewart held the hearts of theatregoers in Australia and New Zealand and even when she had grandchildren following in her footsteps she still re tained her popularity and her remarkable vivacity. It is as Nell in ° Sweet Noll of Old Drury” that Nellie Stewart will be best remembered, and Wanganui enthusiasts who were fortunate enough to see her in her favourite role will understand why she will remain a vivid memory long after the final curtain has fallen.
