UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY
SETTLERS REFUSE TO PAY RATHER GO TO GAOL [Per Press Association.) WHANGAREI, June 20. Objecting to tho principle of tho un employment levy, three well-known settlers of tho Kaitaia district wore brought before tho Magistrate yesterday, charged with failing to pay the levy. Robert Switzer and Edward Panther wcro fined £3 with 10s costs, and Fran cis Donaldson was fined £1 and 10s costs. Panther, who had resigned his commission as a Justice of the Peace as a protest, asked tho Magistrate t' fix default in order that he might go to prisoif. The Magistrate refused to assist him to make a martyr of himself, saying that defendants had gone as far as they could with their protest and should meet their legal obligation, however unpalatable. If the fines wero not paid distraint on property would follow. Donaldson paid the levy before the Court sat.
