DISTRIBUTION IN AUCKLAND. PURCHASE BY GOVERNS! LN I’. AUCKLAND, June 12. A ration of meat is being added to the orders being issued this week by the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board 1o applicants for outdoor relief. This has been made possible by the purchase some lime ago by the Government | of about 20.500 carcases of mutton at prices considerably below those ruling | to-day. Most of this meat was bought in the j .lawke’s Bay district almost three i months ago, when, owing to the shortj age of feed and the depressed state of the market, prices were phenomenally low. The meat was held in cool store, and now that the winter has arrived the Government has advised the various hospital boards that it will be available to supplement the food orders which lhe boards customarily issue. It is understood that the Auckland Board will receive upward of (5000 carcases for distribution. This will be received in parcels of about 500 carcases, as required. ’.Mr. AV. Wallace, chairman of the Auckland board, stated yesterday that the offer of the Government was considered by the Relief Committee of the board that day, and arrangements had been made for the issue of the additional ration. The amount tn be given to applicants for relief would vary according to the size of the family, but in the case of a family of live it would be about 71b a week. The board’s contractors for meat, the Auckland Meat Company, had undertaken to cut up and deliver the meat to recipients at a very low cost to the board. The board was very gratified at the way the contractors had met it in this matter, as the payment to he made would merely cover the cost of cartage and wrapping paper.
