MANGAWEKA

VALEDICTORY. On Tuesday evening at Ruahine, Mi and Mrs J. B. Guthrie -.nd family were .given a most enthusiastic farewell. | Friends gathered from many miJ»\s round and the hall was overflowing. Tht evening’s entertainment took the form of dancing and car ls and went with a real “old time" swing. Mr W. P. Shaw, speaking on behalf of the people, touched on tho guests’ almost life-long association with the I district and voiced tho community’s regret at their leaving. He remembered ’Mr Guthrie coming to Ruahine as a lad with his father, the late Hon. D. Il Guthrie, and had watched him grow to manhood. It was with a sense of deep regret that the district should lose a family of such worth and long standing. He then handed Mr and Mrs Guthrie a substantial cheque as a slight token of the esteem in 'which.they were held, and wished them every success and much prosperity in their new home at Otorohanga. Mr G. Kreger then supplemented Air Shaw's remarks and said the John Guthrie family would leave a vacant spot in .Ruahine ’s social life which would never bo filled. They would always receive a warm welcome.

Mr Hall, on behalf of the school committee, spoke of Mr and Mrs Guthrie’s work in connection with school life. He thanked them for what they had done, and called On Miss Rea Thompson to present Mrs Guthrie with a volume of “Galsworthy’s Plays’’ as a token of gratitude for her help to them with their concerts and sewing. Musical honours were accorded the guests. Air Guthrie, responding thanked them for their kindness and c pressions of esteem, and extended to any of them a cordial welcome to their new home.

After the singing of Auld Lang Syne, supper was handed round. Airs Kirkley sang several songs and received hearty applause. Airs F. 11. Thompson played for the dancing and was ably assisted by Afiss N. Aleads and Air Carr.
