OHAKUNE

BOROUGH COUNCIL There was a full meeting of the Borough Council last week. A letter was received from the Wai marine County Council inti mating that the traffic inspection arrangements had been cancelled by Rangitikei County Council. It was agreed to defer action in the meantime. The Highways Board notified they were unable to assist with a grant fur scaling watea {Street. Air R. The finance committee recommended that the vendors of benzine and oil in Ohakune be asked to submit quotations. That tenants of borough leases be asked to exercise their option of applying for a renewal and that a valuer be appointed. The report was adopted. Electric Light Committee. The electric light committee recommended that the loco foreman N.Z. Railways, be informed that the Council would not make a reduction for current. Cod’ was appointed borough inpector, etc., out of 17 applications. Owing to shortage of water there have been several interruptions to the power supply. An attempt to supply Raetihi with current on 19th inst. was unsuccessful. During May 75 men were employed on relief work. WELFARE COMMITTEE The various sub-committees of the Citizens’ Alutual Welfare Committees are busy at work. Alany offers of elp have been received on behalf of the needy. Tho Catholic community has made an offer of a weekly sum of cash and free use of St. Joseph’s Hall until the end of July. Air AV. Mahony has offered to take ( charge of food, clothing, etc., and has provided a depot. Airs Hanger and Airs Purdon have undertaken to collect clothing, and is anxious to hear of anyone with articles of apparel that could be used, and arrangements have been made for their colection by ringing phono No. 108 or No. 32. Football clubs and railwaymen have started a system of fortnightly contributions. A series of bridge parties has been arranged and already some donations have been received from this method. A concert will be held on the 22nd in aid of tho funds. RAILWAY OFFICERS The annual social gathering of the members of the Railway Officers’ Institute was well attended, and Air Doidge occupied the chair. Items were given by Alessrs Hunt, McGovern, Clark, Dalziel, and B. Rankin. The usual toast list was carried out and all enjoyed themselves. I Air Levick spoke of the management. They were now servants o? the Control Board, and it was pleasing to see Air Sterling was to be chairman of that Board.

Air Barratt, when speaking of tho work of tho Institute, said the civil servant was becoming more insecure each day'. Air Doidge urged co-operation among tho members of tho Institute. Air Langstone, decia. d that tho Parliament of New Zealand was as high in integrity and capability as any in the world. Alessrs Lewis, Smith, Rees, Wilson Turrell, Blyth, Watts, Devlin, Holst,’ Kirkwood, Hill and Nation also spoke.
