HOCKEY NOTES ’ The management committee of the • Taihape Hockey Association met on • Monday evening. Afr W. H. Fookes, president, presiding over a satisfactory attendance. ’ The meeting commented upon the r outstanding success of the recent euchre f party which Mr IT. Eaton had organJ iaed for tho benefit of the association. Air Eaton was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his excellent efforts. A letter was received from tho Tauniar 1 unui Association inviting Taihape to seed a ladies’ team to Taumarunui on 1 June 24. It was decided to accede to L the request later in the season, so as r to avoid interrupting tho chib fixtures. 1 ft was reported that the association Y nets had been damaged by school chil • dren who had used them during pla\ hours. After some discussion the sec rotary was instructed to write to tin headmaster in regard to the matter. It was resolved to hold the Joblin Cup tournament (ladies’ eleven-a-sido tourney), on July 30, and to arrange for a hve-a-sido tournament for men for tho Quirk Cup to bo held on tho • same date. The members of the win ning teams will each receive a minia tore cup. Nominations close on Juh* 18. A dance will ho hold in the Town Hall in the evening. Pakeha nt Taihape at 3 p.m. COURT NEWS At the Taihape Police Court yesterday Phillip Augustus Kesler, alias Gesler Phillip, aged 24 years, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient lawful means of support. He was also charged with travelling in a railway carriage be tween Palmerston North anad Taihape without having paid the proper fare.', and with intent to evade payment’ thereof. Sergeant .Joyce, who appear j cd for tho police, informed the court that accused had boarded the expres>i nt Palmerston North and when asked; I for his ticket he said he had just been ■ discharged from prison. Later it was ■ learned that accused had been dis ■ charged from gaol a week previously, t When interviewed by the police at Taihape accused said he had bought a ticket, but refuted this statement later. Kesler pleaded guilty to the vagrancy charge, but added that ho could not help himself. On the charge of travelling without a ticket he entered a plea i of u not guilty.” The sergeant alleged that accused had not told one truth.
