Mr A. 1). Smith has returned to Wan ganui after spending a week in Auck land.

Messrs Tancred Cooper and Walter Mcllwain have been elected by the Development League to represent that body on the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association.

Guests registered at Foster’s Hotel last night were: Mrs W. P. Watson and son (Mangaweka), Messrs T. AlcMaster, Chamberg, G. W. W. Robinson (Wellington), A. G. Greenfield (Timaru), P. Harrison (Napier).

Tho Commissioner of Police, Air W. G. Wohlmann, announced on Monday that tho Record of Merit had been granted to Constable W. S. Hammond, of the Taranaki Police Station, “for his gallant attempt to save tho lives of tho crew of the steamer Progress, which was wrecked on tho coast at Ohiro Bay on May 1,” and to Constable F. Baker, Island Bay, “for gallantly saving the life of a member of the crew of the Progress.”

At a meeting of the Wanganui Development League held last night a motion of sympathy was passed with Air Beswick in the death of his wife.

Sympathy was also expressed for Mrs T. B. Williams in the death of her husband. Tho president. Air Webb Jones, said that Mr Williams had been one of Wanganui’s best known and highly esteemed citizens, while in his private life he was honoured as a man of integrity and and uprightness. In his public capacities he had devoted much time and energy towards furthering the interests of Wanganui and district. He had been honoured by the citizens by their electing him Chief Magistrate of tho City. Both the motions were passed, all present standing in silence.
