CALL FOR SELF-DENIAL

SOME STRAIGHT SPEAKING “SOME WILL NEITHER GIVE NOR WORK” “This is a time for self-denial,” said Councillor A. E. Halligan at yesterday’s meeting called to discuss problems arising from the suspension of relief schemes. Tho speaker made a plea for those in steady work to make some sacrifice for the unfortunates who did not know where to look to for the next penny. “We have got to deny ourselves something,” he proceeded. “There are a certain number who will not work and a certain number who will not give. We have to get at both sides. The man who won’t work, let him look out for his tucker and the man who won’t give let the committees show him up.” We must give up going to the Government for everything and to the City Council. Every rate we strike will come on ratepayers who are out of work themselves. There should not be much expense in running a scheme like this. Surely there are enough people in Wanganui to do the thing properly —men who will give the whole of their time. Don’t let us pack this thing on to the City Council.” (Applause).
