ADVICE ON AWARDS

CITY COUNCIL AS EMPLOYERS ASSOCIATION MExYIBERSHIP STANDS The City Council has rescinded its previous decision to cease membership with the Wanganui Employers’ Association. A motion to this effect was sponsored by Councillor D. Dickie at last night’s meeting. He said that since it had been decided to cancel membership the council had received a deputation from the Association. “We are the largest employers of labour in the city,” Cr. Dickie proceeded. “The Employers- Association can be looked upon ir the same light as the city solicitor, to whom we refer ail matters of importance. Since the previous resolution was passed we have been to the Employers’ Association for information regarding the rates of pay in other centres.” Councillor G. I. Jones seconded. He said that when an agreement was being made certain information which the Association could have given tho Council was not sought. Had it been obtained it would have saved the ratepayers a good deal of money. “I think it is money well spent,” said Cr W. M. Luxford, referring to the subscription to the Association. “I don’t think there is any saving in stopping fifteen guineas when you can have experts following up legislation year after year and in a position to offer good advice.” Cr. A. E. Halligan’s opinion was that if the Council rejoined the Association it should see that that body was made use of in the future. The council had not availed itself of the assistance before. Cr. F. J. Hill concurred. Cr. H. Horsley thought that some adjustment might be made in the amount of tho subscription. It was too high from the council’s point of view. Councillor F. Symes said that tho council had been told that no use had been made of the Employers’ Association in the past. Since then a deputation had come along and represented matters in a new light. He agreed with tho other councillors that if the opportunity to obtain advice was there for the subscription of fifteen guineas the council should avail itself of it.

The motion rescinding the old resolution was carried without dissent, and, accordingly, the council rejoins as a member of the Association.
