The centenary of the establishment of the Order of St. John in England is io be celebrated by the Wanganui branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. At last night’s City Council meeting an invitation to attend church parade on Sunday with the Brigade was received and the Mayor was invited tu present bugles to the newly formed band of the cadet section ot the Division. It was decided iu write and thank the Brigade for its invitation and the Mayor agreed to act as requested. “Cut” Wipes Out Debt. Owing lu the 10 per cent, cut a judgment creditor was unable to claim a debt from a judgment debtor at the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui yesterday. The debtor, who had paid bis creditor £358, bud offered to pay 5s a week to liquidate his debt. This offer had been made a week beiore the cut was to be made and the creditoi had refused to accept anything but the whole sum. The Magistrate informed counsel for the creditor that the debtor hud now no margin will) which to pay the debt, and that as he had refused to accept the 5s a week he had lost his opportunity of receiving the money. Cheerful Sermons A special meeting of the Ministers Association was called on Monday in rhe Y.M.C.A. to consider a letter from the Welcome Week. Committee asking fur special services of appeal to the people to respond to the needs of the present situation, and to make the week a bright, optimistic one. The following resolution was carried: We take the approach of the Welcome Week Com mitteo as an acknowledgment of the churches’ part in the establishment, and development of our city, and we suggest that the committee urge all citizens to attend their own church services next Sunday, June 21 We further hope that all the members of tin Welcome Week Committee will set the example themselves, and the various ministers of the association be asked to give suit ible attention to the matter of appropriate addresses. Ministers’ Stipends. Disappointment was expressed in the course of the deliberal ions of the Wanganui Presbytery, whi li met. at. Marton on Tuesday, that the General Assembly had failed to give a more definite lead to congregations in the matter of facilitating the reduction of ministerial stipends during tho present financial stringency. It was point< out many ministers had expressed the desire to share in the sacrifices already’ accepted by many of their congregations.
