SISTERS OF COMPASSION Ihe Sisters of Compassion are establishing in Wanganui a building for the care of the sick and afflicted witnout respect to denomination. At last night s meeting of the City • uuiicil a request was made for remission of certain fees in respect to this property— a building permit and ex|*.*n.<e in connecting up the water mains. I’he writer pointed out that no j vharge was being made for the care being bestowed on the unfortunate people in the Sisters’ charge and thv work was a continuation of lhat inaugurated by the late Mother Mary Aubert, of the Wanganui River. • ouncillurs A. E. Halligan and J. Robertson spoke in favour of making the remission and they seemed to reflect the consensus of opinion. It was pointed out, however, that, Ihe legal powers of the Council were in question as the fees referred to were made under the by-laws.
