, REPORTS OF COMMITTEES ORDINARY MEETING HELD The Wanganui City Council met last night, t’o Mayor (Mr N. G. Armstrong) preciding. There were also present: Councillors F. Symes. W. M. I.uxford, F. J. Hill, H. G. Horsley. D. Dickie, L. Pleasants. E. O’Meara. J. Robertson, I’. I. Jones. A. E. Halligan and J. D. Crowley. COMMITTEE REPORTS The following reports of commit tees were presented and adopted Works Committee. (May 29, 1931.) ‘•The committee has given consideration to the estimates of works, services and reserves, for the year ending March 31, 1932, and begs to recommend the same as amended for adoption by tho Council. “In regard generally to tho fees paid by sports bodies for the use of tho Council’s reserves and tho services available thereon, the committee will further review tho terms and conditions upon which they are occupied.’’ (Juno 11, 1931.) “Re Cook’s Gardens for School Football. —Tho committee has considered a request from the schools’ committee asking that the use of Cook’s Gardens be granted for two afternoons per week for football practice by tho boys of the Queen's Park School, and it recommends that permission be given to play ou the afternoons of Tuesdays and Thursdays, under the direction of the caretaker; the permission given being at the pleasure of the Council. “By-law re Stray Dogs in CityArea. —The Retailers’ Association has asked that steps be taken to enforce the by-law prohibiting dogs in the city area unless under control by a leash, and tho committee has given directions that the inspectors take immediate steps to enforce the by law. “Society Prevention Cruelty to Animals.-—This society has asked the Council will allow its Inspector Minnell to act for it, but in view of the many Council duties to be performed by the inspector, the committee regrets that it cannot accede to the equest.

“Proposed Heavy Motor Vehicles’ Regulations.—The Commissioner of Transport has submitted draft of proposed heavy motor vehicles’ regulations which will replace the Motor Lorry Regulations of 1927 and the amendments thereof, and inviting criticism and suggestions concerning the same, before July 31 next. Tho committee has referred these to the chairman and the city engineer to go into.

“Wicksteed Street—Tar Sealing.— A request has been received from a resident of Wicksteed. Street asking that this street beyond Plymouth Street be tar sealed, and tho committee recommends that the applicant be advised that this work will be considered with others.

“Georgetti Road —Dangerous Corner.—Negotiations have been entered into with Mr R. Edgecombe for the acquisition of a portion of his property on a dangerous corner in Georg etti Road; the Council to pay the sum of £5 and the necessary survey, legal and fencing expenses, and the committee asks that the Council agree to finalise the same

“ ‘Neon’ Sign, Guyton Street. — Application has been received for permission to erect a “Neon” sign in front of the central service station in Guyton Street, and the committee recommends that subject to full details of constructiou being submitted to the city engineer and the same being found to be in order, that the request bo granted. “Tar Sealing, Somme Parade—Upper End.—A communication has been received from a resident of the Upper End of Somme Parade, requesting that consideration bo immediately given to tho matter of tar sealing tho remaining portion of this thoroughfare with a view to obviating tho dust nuisance. The committee recommends that tho applicant be advised that favourable consideration will bo given to tho sealing of this road with other tar scaling works. “Disposal of Motor Car.—The committee recommends that tenders be invited for the purchase of one of the Council’s ‘Austin’ 14 motor cars.” Library Committee, Etc. “Re Estimates.—Tho committee has considered tho provisional estimates of receipts and expenditure of the Library, Opera House, and Sarjeant Gallery accounts, and recommends the adoption of the same. “Re Fee for Reserving Books.—The committee recommends that the fee for reserving books be increased from Id to 2d to meet the increased postage for notifications of reservations.” Opera House Committee “Re Heating Opera House.—The committee reports that the existing heating system is satisfactory, and the whole of the building can be sufficiently warmed if users will avail themselves of it. This has been demonstrated by the use of the heater at repeal concerts. “Re Caretaking Castlecliff Town Hall. —The committee has authorised the Town Clerk and the City Engineer to endeavour to arrange with tho present custodian to undertake the caretaking of this hall at a rate for each time it is used or on a commission basis. ‘ ‘ Be Opera House for Technical College Play.—The committee has received an application from the Welcome Week Committee for the free use of the Opera House for a performance to be given by the Technical College pupils; fifty per cent, of the net proceeds to be paid to tho Welcome Week Commit,- : tee and fifty per cent, to tL* College War Memorial Fund. It recommends I the council to make a charge of £6, 1 plus tho usual charge for ligating. “ Re Caretaking Wanganui East, Towu Hall.—-The committee cet ds that the present conditions be not altered.” Tramway Committee “Re Mrs Fitzhcrbert’s claim for accident. —The committee has received from the claimant’s solicitor, statement of claim for £23 9s, and it recommends that the same be referred to the City Solicitor, with instructions net as he thinks best in the interests of the council. “Re Dublin Street Line —Bell Street io Victoria Avenue. —The committee recommends that made
