WAVERLEY

RUGBY FOOTBALL. Results of Saturday’s game were:— Waverley 0, v. Waitotara 6. Kai Iwi 4, v. Up-River 14. The Waverley v. Waitotara match, played at Waitotara, resulted in a win for the home team by 6 (a try and penalty goal) to nil. Fast play throughout, made the match an exciting one for onlookers, but general play was of very ragged nature. Heavy and slippery after the recent rains the ground made it difficult for players to keep their feet, and several times it looked as if some player? were going to be lost in lakes of mud about the field. Waitotara had the advantage of the wind behind them during the first spell. After play at a terrific pace up and down the field, M. Hare scored a splendid try for Waitotara. The kick failed. Half-time was called a few minutes ! after. In the second spell, it was evident from the start that it would be a tussle between the packs. Both were fairly evenly matched, and there was no rest for either until the call of time. Victory was made more decisive by J. Rowe turning into points a penalty kick for off-side play on Waverley’s side. Time, was called with scores: Waitotara 6, Waverley 0. Mr A. Verry refereed. Up-river v. Kaa Iwi. Fast and open was this match played at Kai Iwi. Both team were in splendid condition, and the pace was kept up throughout. There was no lack of thrills for supporters, but the final score is hardly a fair indication of the game. Up-river, however, played the better game through co-operation between forwards and ’•a-k«. 'l'r;-.. r ~. the visitors were made by A. Laird, W. Patterson, T. 'i a - :i . u terbury converting one. For the home team a try was scored by Owen, and the penalty kick by R. Broughton, leaving the final score standing at: —Upriver 14, Kai Jwi 6. Mr Mete Kingi ably controlled the game as referee. GOLF. By carrying his flag to the nineteenth green, J. H. Pepper won the flag match played by members of the local club last Saturday. Next Saturday the first round for the Cave Cup will be played, the draw for which will be announced later.
