THE MONTHLY MEETING GENERAL BUSINESS AND REPORTS The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board was held yesterday, Mr J. T. Hogan, M.P., presiding. There were also present Messrs J. Millward, A. 8. Burgess, J. Patterson, W. J. Rogers, J. Robertson, D. Ross, W. Morrison, J. Morrison and R. Farley. Mr J. Robertson was added to the cool stores committee. Correspondence from the Wanganui Gravel Company with reference to their agreement with the Board w’as referred to the finance committee for consideration and report. HARBOURMASTER’S REPORT. The Harbour-master (Captain J. White) reported as follows: “Entrance. —Soundings were obtained at the entrance as follow: — May 4: 22ft. 3in. h.w.0.5.t.; 19ft. 3in. h.w.n.t.; 14ft. 3in. 1.w.0.5.t. May 11: 21ft. 9in. h.w.0.5.t.; 18ft. 9in. h.w.n.t., 13ft. 9in. 1.w.0.5.t. May 18: 21 f 4 3in. h.w.0.5.t., IRft. 3in. h.w.n.t., 13ft. 3in. 1.w.0.5.t. May 29; 22ft. 9in. h.w.0.5.t., 19ft. 9in. h.w.n.t. 14ft. 9in. .1.w.0.5.t. “From* end of moles to Castlecliff Wharf.—The least depth of water on line of leaders D. is 21ft. 3in. at h.w.o.s.t. and 18ft. 3in. at h.w.n.t. and 13ft. 3in. at 1.w.0.5.t.

“The Navigable Channel.—North of leaders has 22ft. 9in. at h.w.o.s.t. and 19ft. 9in. at h.w.n.t. “River Channel: The least depth of water between the Castlecliff and Town wharf is 13ft. Gin. at h.w.o.s.t. and 10ft. 6in. at h.w.n.t. “Town Wharf. —The least water in the berthage at this wharf is 14ft. Sin. at h.w.o.s.t. and lift. 3in. at h.w.n.t. There are several shallow patches off this wharf and its approach, varving from 12 foot to 13 feet. There is a workable ichannel of 90 feet wide along the wharf with 13ft. 3in. at h.w.o.s.t. “Gas Wharf.—The least depth of water at this wharf is 14ft. 9in. at h.w.o.s.t. and lift. 9in. at h.w.n.t. “Oil Wharf.—The least denth of water at this wharf is 15ft. Sin. at h.w.o.s.t. and Bft. 9in. at 1.w.0.5.t. “Imlay Wharf.—The least depth ot water in the berthage at this wharf Is lift, at h.w.o.s.t. and Bft. at h.w.n.t. Castle cliff Wharves and Swinging Basin.—The soundings are according to plan. Notes on margin. “Oversea, steamers in Roadstead. — The following oversea steamers loaded cargo in the roadstead: “S.S‘. ‘Devon’. —Draught on arrival ford. 19ft. Bin., aft. 22ft. 6in. Took 11 lighter loads comprising: 5375 carcases mutton. 6000 carcases lamb. 807 quarters hoof, 375 hags bully beef. 62 casks tallow. “S.S. ‘Port Hunter’. —Took 46 lighter loads comprising: 7097 carcases mutton, R 667 carcases lamb, 168 quarters beef. 25 casks tallow, 7613 hales wool, 1597 crates cheese, 25 ‘crates frozen sundries, 37 sacks hides. “S.R. 1 Gallic’.—Draught on arrival, ford., 22ft., aft., 24ft. Took 8 lighter loads, comprising: 5155 carcases mutton, 3648 carcases lambs, 500 bags veal, 2586 boxes butter. “S.S. ‘Pakeha’.—Draught on arri-

Took 16 lighter loads, comprising: 2200 carcases mutton, 13,509 carcases lamb, 510 boxes butter, 1866 bales wool “S.S. ‘Port Wellington’.—Draught on arrival ford. 25ft. sin., aft,., 28ft. 3in. Took. 14 lignter loads. “Bucket Dredge.—Has been employed dredging entrance to basin and berthage at No. 2 wharf. May 29, was laid up for annual survey. “Tug, ‘Kahanui’.—Boilers under steam during the month, 46 hours, steaming 30| hours, on passage to and from Wellington.” ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Resident Engineer (Mr H. V. M. Haszard) reported as follow: “Dredging.—The bucket dredge was employed until the 29th of the month in removing silt from the Castleclift berthages. No. 1 wharf was completed to 20ft. at 1.w.0.5.t., whilst No. 2 wharf is (except for the end on cut) completed to M. pile No. 8. The dredge and the Mascotte (which is o- the slip) are undergoing annual overhaul and Government inspection. The quantity dredged at Castlwliff was 5740 cubic yards. Expenditure: Labour, £145 2s 7d, material £2 4s Bd, total, £147 7s 3d. “Tug ‘Kahanui’. —The tug which is under annual survey, left for Wellington on the evening of the 20th to reach the slip on the 22nd., but ran into a very heavy southerly which delayed the slipping until the morning of the 23rd. The hull and equipment was found to be in very good order. The vessel was launched at 8 a.m. on the 26th and left immediately for Wanganui, arriving at 6 p.m., after a good run of 10 hours. The dock survey is now in hand. Expenditure: Labour, £93 17s 2d: material, £37 10 8d; total, £l3l 7s lOd. “Stone Punt. —The immediate repairs necessary to preserve this punt have been completed. Expenditure: £27 0s lOd. “No. 5 Scheme: 24 men, of which an average of 6 mon stand off each week, are employed for the most part planting marram grass on the North Boaeh. M The report -was adopted.
