MARRIAGE SEQUEL

PARENTS’ OPPOSITION MATTER BEFORE A JUDGE The case of the young couple, John Garigan, aged 21, and May Beattie, aged 18, whose marriage in St. George’s Cathedral, in Perth, Western Australia, was recently stopped by the bride’s mother, but who were married by a Methodist minister later in the afternoon, camo before Mr Justive Draper in chambers last week. After hearing affidavits that the bride’s parents were keeping the girl in their custody against her will, and threatened to have the 'Triage annulled, the Judge granted an order that a summons should be issued directed to tho mother and father of the girl to show cause why a writ of habeas corpus should not be issued against them to produce the girl before tho Judge and abide by such order as he might make. It is understood that the mother of the bride had sent a message to the bridegroom stating that if ho would agree to the girl being sent away on a holiday the parents would withdraw opposition to the marriage. He replied that unless the girl was given ser freedom to join him Court procedings must continue. The bride’s mother said she would fight the case to the bitter end. and that tho father refused to allow the girl to leave with Garigan. The father’s objections arc said to be that the couple are too young, that Garigan is iuncniployed, and that they are not in a position to start married life.
