Owing to the serious depression, some of tiie largest shipping companies operating in the North Atlantic, including the ui.ard and Whi'n Star lines, have cancelled nearly 40 sailings. Not a single one of tho 16 giant liners in tho trans-Atlantic trade ha v o .showed a profit in 1930, ■while costs wecr so largo that many round trips showed a loss of £20,000 each.
