COUNTY BRIDGES IN THE WAIMAItINO. In his report to tho Waimanno County Council, the engineer, i\lr 11. L. Hogg, stated that he proposed iu\ealiguiing the conditions on tno eastern si-10 of tho Whaharangi Stream to ascertain whether it will bo possible to drive a water tunnel. If tms can be dune it will obviate tho necessity lor a bridge. Nothing .further has been done in conncciiuu with tho renewal of the bridge over die Waitangi (Stream, Waiuuru Road. The existing bridge is becoming dangerous and calls for immediate attention. A request has been made to the Puulic vvorks Department to allow the Council to proceed with the erection of the bridge over the Waitangi Stream. luraKinu Valley Road. The material.' have been delivered for some time, but owi , to an oversight, no provision was made for the work on last year’s estimates. The Otautu Bridge, Makino Road, is completed, with the exception of the painting, which, will be completed this week. Tno repairs to tho Makino bridge will bo completed next. New stringers have been delivered to the small bridge near Brown’s, Wuipapa Road, and will be set in position forthwith. The small bridge near Sollitt’s old mill requires immediate attention. A line of concrete pipes, and filling will be set over same tu replace this bridge and w’ill put the worn in hand without delay.

The Matahi wi Road suspension bridge is deteriorating fairly rapidly, and will soon require renewal. Ways and means should be gone into to provide the necessary finance. In the meantime the engineer proposed including an item for this work on the current Public Works estimates.

Plans and specifications have been prepared for the proposed bridge over the Kaiwai Stream on Field’s Track, Karioi, tenders for which work will be called when approval of the proposal is received, and the necessary finance can be arranged. It is understood that the Public Works Department is erecting a new bridge over the Manganui River leading to tho Rakautangi Road, and is building same of hardwood timbers. Tho proposals for crossing the Valley Road in connection with the Raetihi Borough. Council’s stream diversion will be satisfactory, from the County Council’s point of view.

The renewal of tho timber cover over the open cut, Valley Road, will be done when conditions are favourable. This also applies to a similar cut on the Ohura Road. Two small bridges on the Hururo Road, near Horopito, require urgent repairs and will be attended to when the timber comes to hand.
