MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL At the meeting of the Manawatu County Council on Tuesday when discussing the financial position, Councilor Perrett stated that much care would be necessary during the coming year. Councillors Reid and Boyce expressed the opinion that things would come out all right in the end. In the annual report, Mr H. V. Bo ad (engineer), drew attention to the serious problem, from a maintenance point of view, of the Himatangi-Rangiot.u Road. With another winter to go through before any paving can be undertaken, very intensive maintenance will have to be carried out to keep r.he road in shape and to protect the foundation work which has been so costly to complete. The estimates for the current year were considered and adopted. The proposed expenditure under the various headings is as follows: Main Highways.—Whirokino Road and bridge £B3O, Foxton-Himatangi £2OO, Himatangi Sanson £1956, SansouBulls £l4O, Himatangi-Rangiotu £1940, Awahuri-Feilding £687, Mt. Stewart Road £2lO, Foxton-Shannon £771,. Rongotea-Longburn £765, Tangimoana Road £3Bl, Foxton Beach Road £3Bl, Sanson-Awahuri £415. Total estimated expenditure on main highways, £8676. Ridings.—Bandon £506, Mt. Stewart £399, Waitohi £513, Rongotea £563, Carnarvon £493, Kawakawa £745, Awahuo £615. Total estimated to be spent in all ridings is £3452. The estimates, Mr Bond explained, were framed to conform as nearly as possible with the amount of money which will possibly be available, but do not in any way represent the amount required to efficiently carry out the maintenance required. Reporting to the council in regard to the motor lorries, the engineer said the two three-ton Leyland trucks had been fitted with pneumatic tyres. I’he result was a marked improvement both Rs regards speed and the amount spent on repairs. The life of a pneumatic tyre has been proved to be longer than that of a solid tyre. Stone Crusher.—The plant has been Working satisfactorily during the year and no trouble has been expericriced. The plant was dismantled and reerected on a higher level during the year. The total output was 13,<857 cubic yards.
