An Edmonton message states that following alleged threats, unemployed, allegedly under Communist influence, seized the civic buildings and looted stores. The Premier, Mr Brownlee, called for a militia detachment, and Strathcona Horse were rushed in a special train from Calgary. A score of unemployed invaded restaurants, refusing to pay after securing meal’*. They were arrested, but a mob stormed the police headquarters in an attempt to release them. The crowd, however, were dispersed by repeated police charges. At Drumheller, Alberta, the whole town council were arrested on the complaint of men out of work, who charg cd them with failing to provide for the unemployed as provided by tho crimin al code. Canadian law stipulates that it shall be the duty of the civic bodies to “make suitable provision for the poor and destitute.”
