GAILLARDIAS

VERY POPULAR FLOWER. The gorgeous colours produced by gaillardias, their easy culture and long period of flowering, and hardiness, make these flowers popular in every garden, and particularly at this season and throughout the winter when there is a general scarcity of flowers for cutting. The large-flowered perennial gaillardias produce almost throughout the year their large handsome flowers in various colours, including clear golden yellow selfs and brilliant crimson-edged blossoms and others banded with gold. Some have rich crimson flowers showing very little yellow. They are extremely popular for the bold decoration of bowls and vases. Planted in groups in the mixed border they show conspicuously. In planting gaillardias arrange the plants 12in. apart to allow them room to expand. Being perennials—with the exception of a few double and singleflowered varieties that are of annual duration and should be treated accord ingly—they may be allowed to remain in the same place for several years. However, many growers prefer Io trfcat them as annuals, renewing every year with seedlings and giving them a change of soil. Gaillardias are excellent rock garden plants. They root deeply and may be treated as permanent occupants. Too much cannot be said in favour of the large-flowered perennial gaillardias.
