BUSINESS OF THE COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING HELD The ordinary monthly meeting ol the Manawatu County Council was held on Tuesday. Present: -Councillors W. E. Barber (chairman), H. H. Hunt, J. Boyce, W. E. Pearce, D. \V. Reid, J. 11. Perrett, and J. F. McKclvic. Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows:-—From New Zealand Railways forwarding voucher for i paid-oas collected. Received. I From Department of Internal Affairs I rec fee for au tioneers’ license being paid into the council’s account at the bank. Received. I'ioin the Public Works Department acknowledging letter containing reso luti< ns with regard to Manawatu-Oroua River Board’s scheme. Received. From National Provident Board re contributions tn fund in proportion to leducfion in salaries and wages. Re From Public Works Department authorising work to be done on Mt. Stew-art-Awahuri Road. Received. From Palmerston North Hospital forwarding copy of annual levy to be made. Received. From the Manawatu Automobile Association with reference to HimatangiRangiotu Hoad. Received. From C. G, Beattie re deepening of culvert on Cooper’s Line. Work to be done as requested. From C. (Irvey re drain crossing Jones’ Li.ie Left in the hands of en gineer for attention. From R. E. Dixon re banking on Main Drain Road. Left in hands of engineer. From J. 11. Duncan re rental of kerbside pump. Request for reduction not agreed to. It was resolved: That the engineer be authorised to interview the Oroua County Council regarding the procuring of one span of the old Aoraiigi Bridge. That the request of the New Zealand Society of C.E. for road statistics be referred to the engineer. Par ticulars to be supplied if possible. That the resolution by way of special order declaring fennel a noxious weed bo confirmed. That the Sluggish River Drainage Board be informed that the council ac ccpts no responsibility as to cleaning out drain across road near Rangiotu That the following alterations be made on the rate roll: —Estate of F. Robinson to R. D. F, McKelvie pt. sec tions 159/61 Carnarvon. J. F. McKelvie to E. Christensen, lot 1, section 164/66, Carnarvon. Engineer’s Report The County Engineer reported as follows: Awahuri-Feilding.—Maintenance metal has been spread on this road and grading has been continued. Sanson-Awahuri. —The re-sealing of the Awahuri-Mt. Stewart Road has been carried out when the ’ eather has been suitable and this work should be completed within the next few days. Drains have been deepened on the San-son-Mt. Stewart Road. Himatangi-Sanson. Grading and patching has been done and the drains are being cleaned out. Himataugi-Rangiotu.—Surface meta] has been spread and grading carried out. Foxton-Himatangi.—The metalling ol this road has been completed and bituminous paving has been completed for a distance of 4 miles and 10 chains. A start has been made to construct a short length of road between the county boundary and the bituminous sealing in the Foxton Borough. Foxton-Shannon. —Surface metal has been spread ami grading carried out on this road. The Shannon Bridge has been tightened up generally and a little repair work is being carried out to the abutment piers. Whirokino.—This road has been patched with pit metal. The bridge over the Government drain has been repair ed and the decking and general repairs to the River Bridge arc completed. Ridings Saiidon. —Grading has been done on several roads and drains cleaned out. Repair metal has been spread on Ohn kea Road. Mt. Stewart.—Grading has been carried out on Kowhai, Lee’s and Rakihou Roads. Waitohi.—Draining and banking has been completed on Taipo-Awahuri Rond. Grading has been done on Taipo-Awa-huri Road ami Rowe’s Line. Rongotea.—Several roads have been graded. Surface metal has been pul on Loen’s Line. The drain on Kai matarau Road has been re-started and should not take many days to complete. I The Automobile Assm/ation have erectI ed several traflie signs in the Kopane district. Carnarvon. —Surface metal has been spread on Puki Puki ami Lake Roads, also on Whale Line. Grading has been done on Puki Puki, Lake and Ropu tarn Roads. (Several signs have been erected by the Automobile Association in this riding. Kawakawa. — Lupins have been cut on| Pyke’s and Mangawhata Roads. Roads in the riding have been patched with metal and graded. Fourteen chains ol Kellow’s Line have been formed between Downs and Taikorea Roads. Awahou. —No. 6 Line between Nos. 1 and 2 Lines has been graded and a sand drift repaired at the end of No. 1 Line. The formation work on Motoiti Road has been completed ami a start has been made to clear Wilson’s Road in readiness for formation work. Alain Drain Road.—This road has boon graded and patched. Fennel has been cut back. General.—The crushing plant has been working satisfactorily ami a 1 double shift engaged almost throughout the uionth. Traffic Inspector's Report The traffic inspector reported that he had been informed that, the carting of logs was taking place along the Main Drain Road. He had gone down and found one lorry owner with a greater weight than the license taken out. The other lorry was within the weight for which his license was issued. As the Main Drain Road is classed as in the third-class, available for 6 tons only, informations were laid | against the offenders. 1 have been i asked to arrange for the lorry owners to wait on the council to-day. Since my first visit 1 have been on the Alain Dinin Road several times and the loads have been cut down to within the limit allowed by their licenses. A number of gorse and lupin no tices have been sent out and 1 . cc a fair amount is being cleared. One person for allowed stock to wander was lined IBs. Others will be dealt

with this week. One person fur having no rear vision mirror, and a lorry owner for carrying a greater load than allowed by his license will also be dealt with. Trainway Manager’s Report ! The tramway manager reported that the credit balance on the month’s working was £lBO 10s 3d. The chief items of traffic were:—Minerals and manure, 198 tons; merchandise, 172 tons; cheese and eggs, 193 crates; sheep, 39 trucks; metal, 1400 cubic yards.
