GISBORNE EARTHQUAKE

NO NEED FOR ANXIETY. {STATEMENT BY MAYOR [ Per Press Association. ] GISBORNE, Alay 13. During the past few days, the Atayor, Air ID. W. Coleman, has received a large number of messages from various parts of New Zealand expressing sympathy with Gisborne in the earthquakes last week, and asking if assistance were needed. Air Coleman said to-day it appeared that misleading or erroneous reports were abroad in respect to tho earth quakes “For general information,” said Air Coleman, “1 desire to state publicly that Gisborne escaped lightly, in the first case, there has been no loss of life nor has anyone been injured in the slightest degree. Reports from semi-official sources arc to the effect that the earthquakes on Thursday last were not nearly so severe as the one on February 3. Moro shop windows were broken on this occasion, however. “The remaining portion of a parapet in the business area came down and smashed the verandahs of four shops. r l’wo or three walls were damaged, but in every case, so far as can bo gat he re 1, they had been loosened by the previous earthquake. Fewer chimneys came down last week than during the February upheaval. “Taken all through, Gisborne came through the ordeal well, and there is not the slightest need for anxiety by friends and relatives living in other parts of the Dominion.”
