Leicestershire batted for an hour be- ( fore lunch. The weather was dull and the attendance moderate. Page obtained a sterling century in 230 minutes, hitting with greater freedom than on Saturday and scoring well on the off. He was caught at cover in trying to force the pace. Weir batted steadily. Lowry and Talbot were hard hitting, the latter being particularly vigorous off Geary. Dawson gave Leicestershire a very good start before being caught at cover. Merritt then claimed a wicket from Berry and Armstrong before lunch. Shipman batted solidly for 58 when he was beaten by a good ball from Merritt. Astill and Kiley gave sound displays. Coleman used the long handle effectively. Sid will and Snary made a great effort to avoid a followon, failing by eight runs. The innings I closed for 277. The New Zealand bowling was steady. Cromb and Merritt bowled 28 overs and Weir 34. Cromb made a highly satisfactory start, turning to the off occasionally and maintaining a good length. He bowled ten maidens.
