COAL MINERS’ PROTEST DEMONSTRATION AT WESTPORT ( Per Pres Association. 1 WESTPCRT, May 12. A mass meeting of coal miners and other workers was held in Westport to-day to protest against the cuts in wages and salaries. A procession was funned and marched through the principal streets headed by the Granity Band, and into Victoria Square, where n workers’ message was delivered in eloquent speeches by Messrs Nixon E. Lock, B. Davidson, D. Hayward and N. Bourne, and tho following resolution was carried: ‘‘That this meeting of Buller district workers enters our protest against tho Government’s action in reducing wages. Wc also demand that legal authority be granted to the Arbitration Court to revise the existing awards,s and that the agreement should be withdrawn, ns tho reduction in our already low standard of living is not justified.” Another resolution was: “That this meeting of Buller district workers enters an emphatic pretest against the arrest and jailing of workers in connection with the uuemployed demonstr:! tions, and we demand their release. Further, demand the right for the workers to demonstrate ns a moans of expressing their opinions on industrial and political matte’" ’’
