DECLINE IN FOOD PRICES
FURTHER FALL IN MARCH COST OF LIVING LOWER (For Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 11. A further substantial reduction in the retail prices of food is shown by the Government Statistician’s calculation of the index number as at Alareh 15. It shows a decrease of 36 points from the February number and repre sents prices as only 26.4 per cent, above those for July, 1914. Alcat prices os pccially fell during the month. The general level of them is now only 5.6 per cent, above July, 1014, prices. Since January, 19.30, retail prices have fallen 207 points—equal to the total decline in the preceding eight yea rs. Combining the latest food prices index with the February indexes for other prices, the Statistician gives the “all groups” price level for March as 49.1 pep cent, above the pre-war base “so that it now takes £l. 9s lOd on the average to purchase what could have been purchased for £1 in July, 1914.” A year ago the “cost of living” was 58.8 per cent, above, pre-war.
