The engineer proposed coating the sec- j tion with grit if satisfactory arrange- | : ments can be made with the Ohakunc 1 • Borough Council. I “The contractor has completed his I contract in connection with further | metalling on the Oruakukura Road, and I is now engaged on extra work, sufficient, to carry the metalling to Hunter’s at the foot of the hill. The grader has been used on the Parapara Road to the south county boundary with good results. This section is in good order and will improve further with frequent use of the grader. A rc-adjustment of surfacemen’s lengths will be necessary in this locality at a near date. Maintenance metal is required on the section of Parapara Road between tho Mangawhero bridge and Orc Orc and will be delivered as soon as possible. Tho contractors for metalling on tho Ohura Road have commenced work, and have a fleet of good trucks available as required, which factor should facilitate expeditious working. It will be advisable to extend this contract to the extent of tho funds available, should conditions be favourable. Owing to unfavourable weather, and other conditions the progress on the metalling works, Middle and Motete roads, have been slow. The base course has been laid on the Middle ronct, and approximately 35 chains of the base course done on the Motete road. Further work will be done on these roads at a later date, or as soon as arrangements can be made.” In connection with work in the Karioi riding the engineer proposed to endeavour to hire the Forcsty Department’s tractor and grader to use on the roads within easy range and to suit the convenience of the department. It was agreed to close parts of Mangateitei road. Field’s Track, Mangaeturoa and Pchci roads to motor lorry traffic from May 20 until October 1. The action of the committee appointed to deal with the acceptance of tenders for metalling Raetihi-Ohura road in acceptance that of Hill Bros., of Bulls, for £692 7s 6d, was confirmed. General. The Public Works Department advised the handing over of the control to tfie council of portions of Waipapa Valley Road, Mangatiti West Road, and Maugapurua Road. About nine miles of new road would thus be added to the council. The Public Works Department advis ed tho payment of £ll7, being refund of grant expended in anticipation. N.Z. Society of Engineers sought the permission of the council to tho engineer supplying data relative to roads for the purpose of investigating road economies. It- was decided that owing to the expense and the present financial stringency no action be taken. The Treasury advised the cancellation of loan authorities no longer re quired in connection with Mahotuku bridge and Harris deviation.—The clerk explained that the money had been raised in other ways than by loan. < The Commissioner of Transport forwarded a copy of regulations regarding the issue of motor-drivers’ licenses. Tho Commissioner of Transport suggested that a conference of representatives of local bodies in No. 8 Highway district be held at Wanganui to discuss road classification and expenditure.— It was resolved that if a conference is called the chairman and engineer repre - sent the council.

Mr H. J. Angus, Orautoha, asked permission to put his fence on the road reserve as he proposed to plant trees on the portion of land fenced in.—The request was referred to Cr. Price and the engineer to inspect and report. Messrs C. L. and H. J. Duigan, Wanganui, intimated that application would be made in due course to set up a Compensation Court in respect of their claim for land taken at Karioi. The Wanganuj County Council wrote thanking the Waimarino County Council for the consideration given to the question of tho Wangaehu Valley Road and agreeing to terminate tho agree ment providing for tho cost of maintenance of the road. Tho District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, notified that tho level crossing near Erua station was closed and a road over bridge had been erected about one mile south of the Erua station. Various resolutions with regard to the issuing of debentures and the set ting up of a special rating to be known as Parapara Road Area No. 4, were agreed to by the council. The ranger, M r K McKenzie, report ed that ho had found three horses and .12 cows on the roads and had collected £1 8s and put a horse and cow in the Ohakune pound. Permission was given the Makotuku Timber Company to erect a gate and fence across the Pakihi road and the placing of a cattle stop near a railway crossing subject to the regulations of tho New Zealand Railways and the Public Works Department. Accrued thirds amounting to £163 9s 8d had boon paid into the county fund by the receiver of land revenue. Accounts amounting to £1378 Is Id were passed for payment.
