MAGISTRATE’S COURT The monthly sitting of the Taihape Magistrate’s Court opened before Air J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., on Thursday afternoon, and concluded on Friday morning. The list of cases set down for hear ing was a light one. Carrying Passengers Without License H. J. Fowler, trafiic inspector to th 1 ’ Rangitikei County Council, proceeded against Eric Rudolph Jacobsen, carrier (Taihape), on a charge of using a motor car for the carriage of passengers for hire on the Taihape-Napier road in the Rangitikei County without having obtained the appropriate license for such vehicle. Mr Fowler stated in evidence that Jacobsen had admitted the offence, but bad informed witness that ho was unaware of the fact that ho had to license the car. Defendant had a mail “ruu” from Taihape to Otupae station, and while taking the mail he had also carried passengers in his car and charged them a fare. He had taken out a license now. There was a good deal of this unlicensed taxi business going on, and it was not fair to the licensed taxi drivers. Jacobsen was convicted and fined 20s and costs 12s. Using Unlicensed Motor Lorry Mr Fowler also prosecuted Jacobsen Bros, for using a motor lorry without having obtained a heavy-traflic license. Mr Fowler stated that as the license fee had now been paid, he would not press for a penalty. Defendants were convicted and ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses amounting to 15s. Wandering Stock For allowing one cow to wander at large upon Kaka road, Gordon James Flight was convicted and ordered to pay costs 20s 6d. Matilda Rose Davidson Rae was charged with allowing seven cows to wander at largo upon Titi Street. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs 20s 6d. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS The official count of votes recorded at the municipal elections on Wednesday, May 6, lias been completed. Results are as follows, the figures announced after the first count on Wednesday evening being given in parentheses:—

A candidate at a municipal election loses his deposit if he fails to poll oneeighth of the votes received by the lowest successful candidate. From the above rule it will be seen that none of the candidates at Wednesday’s elections lost their deposits. GOLF NOTES The monthly meeting of the committee of the Taihape Golf Club was held on Friday evening, the president, Mr A. James, presiding over a fair attendance. A communication was received from the "Waimarine Golf Club acknowledging receipt of the Taihape Club’s letter stating that it was cancelling all inter-club engagements this year. The Waimarino Club stated that it fully approved of the action of the Taihape Club, and was acting in a similar manner. The following new' members were elected: —Mesdames H. M. MacCallum, L. A. Sneriff, H. J. Murrell, Misses B. Durrant, J. Maclean, BHowil, P. Oldham, Messrs F. Leahy, W. R. Emerson, F. Reece, H. J. Murrell, L. Bradley. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the match committee that the rules of the Mortland Rose Bowl competition be altered so as to provide for the trophy being won by the player with the best two cards out of three. Earthquake Belief Fund The following subscriptions have been received towards the Earthquake Relief Fund;

GENERAL NEWS \ While playing football at school rc■ently Jack Perrett, aged 13 years, son of Mr and Mrs A. Perrett, fractured his leg. He was attended by Dr Hay. A little girl, June White, daughter of Air and Mrs F. White, fell from rbe running board of a ear on Thursday and badly fractured her arm. She was admitted to the Taihape Hospital for treatment. Her arm was broken near the shoulder. Her father injured himself the previous day through falling from his bicycle. When a goods train from Ohakune reached Mataroa early one morning last week the timber in one of the trucks was observed to bo blazing fiercely and it was some time before the flames were extinguished. The limited express was delayed for some minutes as a result of the outbreak. Little damage resulted, as the truck containing the burning timber was constructed of iron. The Otaihapc Orchestral Society has been resuscitated and held a practice on May 7. Twelve members attended and much enthusiasm was displayed.
