THE CAWNPORE RIOT
INSUFFICIENT POLICE FORCE EVIDENCE AT AN INQUIRY. Received May 10. 5.5 p.m. DELHI, May 9. At the Cawnpore riot inquiry, Air Rogers, Superintendent of Police, stressed the insufficiency of the 600 police with whom he was expected to cope with the troubles which spread in a few hours over the whole city. Complete control could not be obtained for two or three days until the arrival of reinforcements. His 600 were expected to disperse crowds everywhere, arrest riot ers, search houses for arms, escort people, provide guards for the telegraph and two post offices, relieve patrols and rush to places from which appeals for protection were coming. The police worked themselves to a point of exhaustion. The majority of the force had no relief for 48 hours, and still complaints were made against the police methods.
