HARRIERS

SATURDAY'S OUTING OVER FIVE MILES COVERED FORTY MEMBERS ATTEND Another first-class ruu was held by the Wanganui Harrier Club on Saturday afternoon. Forty members arrived at the Aramoho Boating Shed and set oif in two packs for a si-mile run. G. Moore, club captain, was in charge of the senior members in the first pack with the more experienced runners, while E. Cardo was in charge of the newer runners. From the boating shed the harriers made up the Kaikokopu Road and across the plateau on the left to the Great North Road. From hero the trail led past Virginia Lake, down to Peat Park and round again to the Kaikokopu Road and so back to the boating shed. The form shown on the run was a great improvement on that of the previous outings. The dividing of the club into two packs was a good innovation for it allowed the faster men more scop* 1 to show their speed while it did not overtire the newer men. A newcomer, A. Bourgeois, put up a remarkably good run for his first time out with the club, and worked his way into fourth place in the senior pack. Several other new men put up good performances and more will be heard of them in the future. Showers were provided for the runners on their return and after the usual welcome rub down the cup of tea provided by the lady members of the club was most refreshing. The lady members are Misses Q. and I. Leonard. R. Bell, E. Gurr and B. Noble. On behalf of his club mates, G. Moore passed them a hearty vote of thanks. Mr Davis was again present to attend

The club is indebted to the follow ing land-owners for allowing their use of their properties: Messrs Russell. d’Ath, Henderson, Peat, and O’Leary. • WELL RUN! Harrierism is a sport that has come to stay in Wanganui, and every weekend are to be seen followers of the sport out on the open country. The sport not only calls for physical fitness and endurance but for will-power and determination as well. On Saturday one of the senior members who was well up in the ranks of the club last year, was offering some 'ncouragoment to a younger member .He told him to “Hang on behind,” for ic is well known that two men running together provide company for each other and the journey does not seem to be so long. The outcome of this “hanging on behind” was that the younger member hung on so well that he beat the older hand home.
