CHAMPION COLLAPSES TITLE CHANGES HANDS LOSER IN DYING CONDITION [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.] Received Dec. 28, 6.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 28. The Sydney Stadium's middleweight championship of Australia changed hands last night when Jack Haines (11.4) collapsed in the twelfth round after a terrific battering by the Victorian, Ambrose Palmer (11.5 J Haines was later admitted to the St. Vincent’s Hospital in a dying condition, due to a rupture of a blood vessel beneath the skull. An operation was performed early this morning, but his condition is very low. The contest was most sensational. Fourteen thousand persons were present. Palmer was master of the situation throughout. His terrific rips to the body and staggering hooks to Haines’ jaw had the champion hanging on almost every round. Palmer forced the fight from beginning to end, Haines several times unsuccessfullly appealing for a foul. The climax came in the twelfth round when Haines was down three times and, finally, fell on the canvas with a sickening thud. This is the first time he was ever knocked out. LITTLE CLEAN HITTING [Per Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., Dec. 28. After 15 3-minute rounds the featherweight contest at catch weights between Tommy Donovan, of Waitara (featherweight champion) and Johnny Leckie, of Napier, resulted in a draw, a decision which met with the approval of the great majority of the spectators. The fight was staged in the Palmerston North Opera House last night before a large attendance, and although it was full of interest, the*'C was little clean hitting, Donovan being an awkward target and taking eve>y chance to get in close where he did best. Leckie out fought his man, in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth rounds to lead on points put IDonovan finished aggressively to make up the leeway. Mr F. O’Neill was a capable referee.
