DEFENCE STAFF “CUTS" MEN WITH FINE RECORDS NO WARNING OF THE BLOW [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Dec. 15In spite of the fact that the Ministcf of Defence has made no announcement concerning the retrenchments in the staff of the Defence Forces, it is estimated that about 120 officers and men have received notice of their dismissal within the past few days. Retrenchment has been carried out in all commands and officers, non-commis-sioned officers and civilian clerical workers are affected.

Those who have received notice at general headquarters Wellington are: Lieut.-Colonel 11. E. Pilkington, C.B-E. (Quartermaster-General), Lieut. -Colonel H- M. Griffen (Director of Financial Services), Major T. Farr, D.S-0., M.C. (Assistant Adjutant-General), Major G. A. Gibbs, Hon. Lieut. H. J. Mullholland (officer In charge of personal records and permanent forces). In addition it is stated that notice of dismissal have been received by Captain N. Bell, M-8.E., (Ordnance Officer at Trent ham), Capt ain F. E- Forde (Northern Command Ordnance Officer at Ngaruawhaia) and Captain A. R. C. White (Southern Command Ordnance Officer at Burnham). Also it is understood that Regimental SergeantMajor C. H. Gallagher, of Fort Dorset and Staff-Sergeant E. M. McCardell, of \\ elhngton, will also bo retrenched. A number of the clerical staff of General Headquarters will also be retrenched and these include Mr G. F. Rudkin (clerk in charge of the Quar-termaster-General's branch), Messrs R I'ordyce, H. G. Porteuus, F. A. Genet (clerks) and one or two typistes. Although nothing definite has been reported, it is understood that Brigadier M. M. Gardner, D.S.O-, Officer Commanding the Southern Command, has also received notice in addition to Major H. C. Gleudining, D.S.O. (Assistant Adjutant and QuartermasterGeneral, Northern Command) and Lieut. E. Tingey, M-C. (general staff officer, Northern Command). It is stated that althougn some of those who have received notice will receive no superannuation, others will be provided for. In many instances those w*ho received notice had no idea that they were to go until the last minute. The notices were handed out to-day in some cases, although others had been distributed on Saturday. Promises of positions have been made to several of those affected although in the majority of instances nothing definite has been said to those who arc to go.
