NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By 11 Kestrel.”) 1 There will be no more racing in New Zealand until Boxing Day, which is Thursday of next week. Then i ill commence the holiday racing carnival that extends over the New Year holidays. Owned in Wanganui. Bred at Koatanui by Mr G. M. Currie and owned in Wanganui by Mrs S. L. Parsons, the Tespian-Aspic colt Aspian won the Waipa Plate at To Awamutu on Saturday in easy style. What surprised stay-at-home backers, however, was the double-figure dividend that was attached to the victory. Most followers of form in Wanganui were, prepared for the win and acted accordingly. Thus there was much chagrin in certain quarters. Not for Ellerslie. At Trentham on Saturday morning concentrate and Historic finished practically on terms at the end of a mile in Imin. 46 2-ssec., the first half-mile having been run slowly in 55scc., but the pace being increased over the final half-mile. Historic is definitely not to go to Auckland, but will race at Awapuni, and B. H. Morris will be required for him there. Concentrate is thus left without the services of Morris for the Auckland Cup, and probably either A. E. Ellis Or T. Webster will now be engaged for him. H. B. Lorigan is also without a rider for Oratorian in the Foal Stakes.

End of Delightment When being brought back to Whangarei last Thursday evening from Huanui, Air J. P. Tierney’s stallion Delightment (Catmint—Delightful), developed internal trouble as the result, of a rupture and had to be destroyed near Glenbervie. An Ellerslie Double.

"H. Wiggins has been engaged to ride My Own in the Auckland Cup and Gesture in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. The Ellerslie horseman has previously been successful on both these horses, having been associated with My Own in the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton and Gesture in most of her successful exploits as a two-year-old last season. May Race at Ellerslie

Kaokaoroa finished third in the Papntawa Hurdles at Woodville on Wednesday after being sixth on the opening day. He is engaged in hurdle events at the Auckland summer meeting. He was second to Call Again in the Tomoana Hurdles at the Hawke’s Bay spring meeting in September and occupied a similar position to the same horse in the Greenmeadpws Hack Hurdles at the Napier Park meeting a little later and subsequently won at the Poverty Bay meeting. He is a halfbrother to Maunga, by King Soult, is owned by Miss M. J. Douglas, who owns Maunga, and is trained by J. Griffiths at Hastings.

Sold at Auction

At Riccarton early in the week three of Air G. Gould’s three-year-olds were sold by auction. Pharaoh was bought by the South Canterbury trainer J. W. Pankhurst, for Air H. Alorton, of Timaru, for 200 gns. Jael was purchased by the Riccarton trainer F. Christmas, for Air E. W. Spencer, Reefton, for (i() gns. and Galante by the Riccarton trainer, J. B. Pearson, for 20 gns. Defeated Cylinder Karapoti has raced well this season, beating Cylinder in the Great Northern Guineas, while in his next effort he won the open sprint ‘on the first day of the Waikato meeting. Karapoti has been paid up for in the Flying Handicap at the Waipa meeting to-day. He is also entered for the Railway Handicap,’ Great Northern Derby and other events at the Auckland summer meeting. Ten Shilling Tote A special meeting of the stewards of the, Pahiatua Racing Club was held recently to consider the advisability of installing a 10s investment machine at its forthcoming meeting. The opinion was fairly general, in view of the present financial stringency that it was a move in the right direction and the advice of Messrs Alarctt and Fox is to be sought in the matter. Following their reply the stewards will again meet and definite action be takenAbout Gay Crest There is a disposition to favour the chances of Gay Crest in the Auckland Cup, but. there is no guarantee that he will be a starter in the big event. His success at Woodville on Tuesday drew attention to his chances during the holiday carnival- Gay Crest raced well in Sydney and at the recent A.J.C. meeting accounted for the Waverley Handicap, one mile and three-quarters. He did not show up very prominently at the New Zealand Cup meeting, his best effort being a fourth in the Metropolitan Handicap, one mile and a half, on the concluding day. Last season he won the Great Autumn Handicap, one mile and a half, at Riccarton.

Hunting CryThe success of Hunting Cry in the Railway Handicap at Woodville on Wednesday will bring him into the limelight for his numerous engagements at the Auckland summer meeting. Last Christinas he proved himself the best performer at Ellerslie, winning the Railway Handicap, the Great Northern Derby and the King’s Plate, while he was narrowly beaten into third place in the Royal Stakes. Hunting Cry is en-

gaged in the Auckland Cup, Railway Handicap, Summer Cup, King’s Plate, Grandstand Handicap and Clifford Plate.

An Early Winner If form at Woodville is to prove a reliable guide Evening Hero will be returned a winner at the holiday meetings- He showed up well for a considerable portion of the distance in the hurdle event on the opening day at Woodville, while on Wednesday he was much better supported and 1 eat all but the winner, Easterly. Last season Evening Hero, after winning on the flat, was put. to hurdling and accounted for the Kidnappers’ Hack Hurdles at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. A Good Investment?

On the first day at Taumarunui Gallant Jack got knocked back at the start of the Alaiden Plate, his rider (E. Keesing) being almost bumped out of the saddle. As the result of this, Gallant Jack lost considerable ground, but was up near the leaders at. the home turn, however, he failed over the last bit and finished third. On the second day, in a similar event Gallant Jack was one of the first to leave the barrier and was in front throughout, winning by a neck from Wee Prince. Gallant Jack is a three-year-old gelding by Top Gallant from Conceit, by Boniform from Lady Wayward 11, the latter being the dam of Emperador, Ribble and Prodigal. He was bred in Australia by Air A. P- Wade and cost his present owner Mr H- Rothery 150 guineas as a yearling and looks like being a profitable investment. Eiders for Auckland. Riding engagements announced in conjunction with the Auckland Cup ami Bailway Handicap are as follows:—H. Wiggins (My Own, Gesture), R. Mcßae (Gay Cockade), H. Gray (Star Stranger and" Hunting Day), A. G. Parsons (Royal Tea), E. Ludlow (Count Cavour and Great Star), R. McTavish (Chromadync). For the Holidays. The Auckland horsemen, L. Dulieu, L. Alanson and A. McCormac, will be riding at the holiday meetings at New Plymouth and Stratford. Dulieu already has a full book for the first day at New Plymouth, where he will ride members of A. E. Neale’s team and others. Another Auckland rider who is coming south is L. H. Watson, who intends to he present at Awapuni and Marton, where he has been engaged to do some riding for the Riccarton trainer, AV. Stone. Drama at Takanini. The first of the visitors for the Auckland summer meeting arrived at Takanini on AVedncsday. This was the bay filly Drama, by Thespian—Drax, owned by the Westmere studmaster, Air John Donald. Drama, who is at present under J. T. Jamieson’s care, ran unplaced in the two-year-old race on the second day at Feilding.
