ON WANGANUI TRACKS

HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS. SATURDAY MORNING’S WORK. By 11 Kestrel.” Wanganui horses will not travel very far afield during the Christmas racing carnival, their efforts being mainly confined to meetings within each reach of this centre. It is likely that Meet Gardner will be at Awapuni and Stratford during the respective gatherings at the beginning and the end of the week’s racing. Walter Rayner is to visit Marton with his team, while W. H. Dwyer may be found at Ellerslie, where Paratoo and Knollmere are en gaged. Other mentors will have the choice between Awapuni and New Plymouth for Boxing Day and Marton and Stratford for New Year’s Dav.

With these engagements still a fortnight distant training operations have not yet reached concert pitch. Most of the horses to travel have been doing good pace work with an occasional flick up. The tracks are in great order. The going on Saturday morning was really good before breakfast, and the light rain that fell during the interval did not have any ill effects on the track, being insufficient to wet the ground. There was no fast gallops.

Before breakfast Rayner worked Pomp, Pedestal, Solange and Impetuous, three-quarter pace work being allotted the quartette. Pomp is engaged in hack events and the open sprints at Marton, and if the fields are not too strong in the open events he may be seen out in them. Pedestal will not take on select company as ho attempted in his recent essays at Ellerslie and Trentham. Two events that extend over a little less than nine furlongs are likely to find him a contestant. Solange is engaged in the maiden events. This team is looking in good nick. A couple of circuits on the plough was covered by Auctioneer, wL is nut looking any the worse for his Levin and Feilding races. He is well engaged at Marton.

H. Johnston will take Arvada to New Plymouth and Stratford, all going well. This filly is working along nicely.

After the breakfast interval Jackplane and Plain Jane set off from the seven-furlongs and the first-named finished well in front in Imin. 35sec. Jackplane was going well but Plain Jane was not all out, being allowed to stride along over the last bit and finish several lengths back. Danny Boy (lightweight) was conceded a couple of lengths start by Hinewair (J. Barry) over five furlongs, at the finish in Imin. 5 4-ssec. Hinewai and they were both going comfortably keeps on improving and. had the worst of the weights. Arisus and Takahue wergf stretched out over four furlongs, which they covered in a tick over 51sec. There .'s nothing wrong with Arisus and the Christmas carnival is likely to find him on the winning list again, while he is engaged at the Stratford New Year meeting.

Fernden was allowed to take his time over six furlongs, moving nicely anl impressing as being likely to show up when next he sports silk. All Humbug, who raced well at Woodville, was let off with trotting exercise. Korokio did like work and may be well in the picture at such a meeting as the Stratford New Year fixture.

W. H. Dwyer did not have any serious tasks for Paratoo, Knollmere and Zarene. The first-named ran two goo'l races at Woodville in spite of an impost that could not be termed luxurious. He was worked the reverse way in view of the fact that he may race at Ellerslie. As far as Knollmere is concerned, this promising chap is favouring a hind leg as a result of knocking himself badly and suffering a fall. It appears to be yielding to treatment. Ceremony and Mislaid were worked by Rayner after breakfast, but neither will race until February.
